What responsibilities are to be expected from licensed electrical contractor companies? What responsibilities are delegated to the electricians employed by these companies? It is common for most of the people you may encounter to be clueless regarding these questions. This is because it is just mostly the people who are working in the construction and building industry who also work closely with electrical contractor companies and electricians and therefore know the true extent of their responsibilities. We shall attempt to give you a short overview of the responsibilities generally taken on by licensed electrical contractor companies and their electricians in this article.

In the most general sense, the responsibilities of licensed electrical contractor companies and their electricians refer to designing, installing, maintaining and repairing residential, commercial and industrial electrical systems and electrical projects. This means they serve clients who come from all social sectors and brackets. The electrical contractor companies are also responsible for supplying the electrical parts & supplies required for all their projects.

Included in the responsibilities of electrical contractor companies and their electricians for maintenance and repair are the upgrade and electrical repairs of electrical boxes, control panels, electric motors, electrical panels, concealed wiring and underground wiring, as well as cable fault locating and the installation, maintenance and repair of street lights, parking lot lighting, landscape lighting, commercial lights and security lighting. Electrical contractor companies also have fully equipped bucket trucks always on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ready to respond to any calls for electrical emergencies.

In areas that are usually hurricane prone, the responsibilities of electrical contractor companies and their electricians include the setting up of hurricane protection systems such as lightning protection systems, surge protection from surge protectors, and generator installation.

Furthermore, the responsibilities of electrical contractor companies and their electricians include government electrical code consulting to assist residential, commercial and industrial clients in avoidance of government code violation either in the construction of new infrastructure of in meeting government requirements for existing buildings. A concrete example is the 40-Year Building Inspection Program of Miami-Dade County in Florida where all buildings aged 40 years old and above are required to undergo safety inspections, such as electric inspection, every ten years.

Electrical contractor companies in the United States are classified into three types based on the scope of their responsibilities. Line electrical contractors or outside electrical contractors are responsible for taking care of full power transmission starting from power plants to power substations and power facilities down to power users. Line electrical contractors and their electricians thus work on the highest voltages in power plant equipment, electric generation and hydroelectric energy systems, among others.

Inside electrical contractors and their electricians are responsible for taking care of all the electrical systems within the property boundaries of their residential, commercial and industrial clients, including the management of home energy audits, heat tracing, electric meters, circuit breakers, junction boxes, fuse boxes and fuses, switches, electric wires, indoor lighting, outdoor lighting, recessed lighting, outdoor fans, patio fans, ceiling fans and ceiling fan repair and water heaters. The responsibilities of inside electrical contractors and their electricians therefore begin exactly where the responsibilities of line electrical contractors or outside electrical contractors end.

Voice/data/video (VDV) electrical contractors or integrated building systems (IBS) electrical contractors are responsible for taking care of relatively low voltage power including auxiliary power generators; power monitoring; emergency electrical & lighting systems; energy efficient solar energy and wind energy; security systems; telecommunications systems including closed circuit television and wireless networks; climate control systems including fire detectors, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and exhaust fans; and fiber optics.
